Novelty

By V. Ganesh

From he is in his mother's womb to now, he lived in the darkness for 17 years. He knows his nose is used to smell. Before he eats, he smells it to know whether it is food or his poop. he knows his ears to listen the sounds. sometimes he listens some gasps of somebody and nothing but a sound of water drops continuously falling on floor for 17 years. He knows his legs and hands are used to walk. he knows the purpose of the mouth is to eat. But he doesn’t know the purpose of his eyes.

For the first time, a small light enters his dark room made up of rocks through a small hole. He is astonished and hides from that dot of light formed on a wall. The dot of light shines because of the wall is wet. He sees there are tiny particles scattering in the beam of light. By observing he slowly moves close to it. He thinks flying particles in that light are nice. then the light from another hole hits his body. This time it larger than that. For the first time he watches his black hair on his peach body. He touches his body and feels this is not how his body was. It makes him dizzy. He thinks light is harmful and it is going to destroy his world. He tries to stop that but then it comes from another hole and it lights up his food. The white rice is on the banana leaf. He picks the rice with his hands and thinks “am I eating this for 17 years” then he throws it. He thinks wild of it and gets kind of vomit sensation. Another light lights up his whole world. He tries to escape from that light. He goes to every corner and hides. Although he can’t stop that light. He sits at one corner hopelessly. The light invades his world. He closes his eyes with his hands but the intensity of light still has effect on him. After heavy gasping and suffocating his eyes becomes like before. His eyes are seeing nothing. But he doesn’t know that because his breathe stop.
