( this is an extended version of my previous piece " the storm" with a new title. I felt she deserved a better ending)

She was dreaming of the ocean again.

Sounds of waves against rock,

salt in the air.

She could feel the wet sand between her toes,

little rocks tickling her feet.

​Closing her eyes,

breathing it all in,

calm washed over her.

​For a few moments

she enjoyed the cool breeze on her heated skin,

the sound of birds chirping

and children's laughter.

​Before the winds rose.

Before the waves turned.

​When she opened her eyes,

the sky darkened.

A storm was coming in.

The laughter and chirping stopped,

like it always did.

​Not even her dreams would offer her

an ounce of peace.

​But not this time.

​As she watched it close in,

she realized she was tired of running

from this nightmare—from all of it.

​This was her dream.

She controlled the storm,

not the other way around.

​Lying back on the sand,

watching as sunlight shone through the clouds,

the blue sky returning,

warmth on her face.

​The birds were back.

She smiled.

The laughter continued.
