I try to sleep.

Shutting my vision, fumbling to grasp sleep's hand as darkness begins to engulf me whole.

knock. knock. knock.

A noise emerges, swallowed by my even breathing,

like a predator's deliberate steps toward its prey.

thud. thud. thud.

The sound grows louder, closer,

much like a shadow looming over my crumpled form,

like the slow coldness that begins to spread through a motionless body.

bang. bang. bang.

The booming echoes.

Or perhaps it is only my own synchronised heartbeat.

The walls start closing in on me-

pressing and prodding,

trapping and caging-

until my heart,

tightly gripped within cold fingers,

feels completely at the mercy of that strange, searing feeling slowly ripping me apart.

Until my nails,

desperately clawing for a way out,

nearly give way.

Until emotion clogs my throat,

so suffocating that I cough violently,

only to awaken free from the nightmare's-or rather, nostalgia's-chilling grip.
