My hairdresser

Sit down in swivel chair

where eyes in mirror meet

explaining color and wanted style

to attentive face,

while fingers slowly, thoughtfully,

trail through outgrown hair.

Color and brush, the paint, arrive,

swirl precariously to the left

in apprentice clumsy hands,

while I await

transformation...

from a round, round bowl.

Gather old hair

to be clipped and trapped,

parted and painted

in silence splattered.

Set the clock

one, two magazines.

Coffee or tea

to fill the wait-and-see.

Rinse the oxblood down the drain

bear the painful arch of back

try to balance on my neck

cleansing head and heart awhile.

Back in plastic toga

Scissors in their hand

I watch snippets of my soul

fragment and float to feet,

and be swept away

like a silly afterthought.

Drone of dryer

hair flying

a mirror behind

proof of ability

a smile and

shy thank you

I leave...

renewed.
