My First Rain

It's not that I'd never seen rain before, but every time it touched me,

I used to flinch.

I hated feeling wet -

the cling of clothes, the mess.

But that night,

she came differently.

Gentle at first, a cautious cadence.

Then she poured -

as if she’d been waiting for me

to finally surrender.

I didn't run.

For the first time, I let her touch me.

She cried for me while I couldn't.

Each drop pulled something heavy from my chest, the pain, the silence.

She asked nothing of me,

Simply stayed until I could breathe again. I found peace - and a faint smile

After that night,

I began to wait for her.

Day after day, she returned.

The harder she fell, the lighter I became.

Then one morning, she didn't come.

The skies were clear, the air still.

And though I felt a small ache,

I understood.

I could stand on my own now.

Still, whenever it rains,

I open the window.

Some kindness

never really leaves.
