Musical Box

What if we are but beings

In a child’s musical box

Dancing, singing, spinning around

Till the melody simply stops?

Maybe we’re all too caught up

In what was and what will be

To hear and feel the music play

Until it’s all a memory.

Life has the funniest way

Of playing musical chairs

Suddenly the music stops

And we find someone isn’t there

The strangest thing of all

Is that none will be spared

Time will run out on us all

The day we cannot find a chair

That day is inevitable

I shan’t spare it much thought

The future is uncertain

This moment is all I’ve got.

Hold those around you tight

For we’ll never really know

How low the oil is burning

Till the lanterns cease to glow.
