Music As A Healer

By Sonika

In the tapestry of human experience, few elements are as universally binding as music. Across cultures, languages, and ages, music has held a significant place, not merely as entertainment, but as a profound source for recovery and healing. The concept of music therapy has resonated through centuries, finding a place in various traditions and modern therapeutic and clinical practices alike.

As we move ahead in the era of self-driven lifestyles, we often are cornered by digital challenges, completely ignoring the fact that we are socially dependent in a 360-degree way. The scenario gets intense and worse when we suffer from diseases like hypertension, blood pressure, cancer, mental health issues, messy emotional management, anxiety, panic attacks, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s which are clinically complex and need an outside help or reach to either recover or go through the painstaking process of treatment and post recovery. In such cases, music comes as a medicine and therapy.

Allow me to share the supreme power of music that comes to our rescue to help go through and recover from many pre and post traumatic experiences.

Music as a Medicine

  • Alexander Pantelyat, a neurologist and a violin player (since age 7), quotes, “Our research suggests that the playing of musical instruments may have positive effects on movement, emotional processing and even cognitive defects in patients with Parkinson’s disease.” Pantelyat states that music helps rehabilitate the networks affected by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

  • Serap Bastepe-Gray, co-founder of the Center for Music and Medicine, says the guitar has potential to be a therapeutic tool in community and clinical settings.

  • Music Therapy has shown massive impacts on patients being treatment in Emergency wards. Music therapy sends emotional and physical strength flows into the body that help recover and heal from injuries and its after effects.

Some of the areas that music heals, making management better…

Emotional Management

Music makes us ‘FEEL’. At its core, music is an expression of emotion with a unique ability to communicate and evoke feelings, making it a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. It allows individuals to process and express their feelings in a way that words cannot, providing a cathartic release for emotions ranging from joy to sorrow, anger to love. Dr. D.Y.Patil, School of Science & Technology, Pune motivates students to indulge in activities and events on music as their college is quite active in organising such events. According to him, music helps an individual to grow his/her emotions and helps improve relationships.

Psychological Management

The therapeutic benefits of music are identified and executed in music therapy, a research-backed practice where music is used to address individuals' physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. Through creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music, individuals can vent out anxiety promoting relaxation. According to Gene Beresin, MD, MA, executive director of The MGH Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds, and a staff child and adolescent psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, on happy occasions, music is used to express joy which brings cognitive and neurological changes in our body, and is an excellent tool for teen treatment and experiential therapy. Even in sad situations like death of a loved one, music helps us vent out pain making our mind and heart feel lighter that helps us to move on.

Physiological Management

Music has a direct impact on the body's physiology. Listening to music can lead to physical responses such as a slower heartbeat, reduced blood pressure, and decreased levels of stress hormones. These are direct and confirmed implications according to many researchers and studies universally. The soothing power of melody and rhythm offers a non-invasive way to improve health and well-being. Many psychologists use music as a tool to calm down violent behaviour and anger management. Those affected develop patience, observance skills and ability to solve issues through communication which proves peaceful and manageable. The effect comes over some time.

Emotional Healing and Management

Music also plays a crucial role in emotional healing, offering solace to those grieving or going through difficult times. It reassures us that we are not alone in our feelings, providing comfort and a sense of belonging. For many of us, music is a steadfast friend that offers unconditional support and understanding. Many teenagers deal with trauma at their homes where they face abusive families or caretakers. They carry many damaged areas within the mentally and physically. By practising listening to music daily or playing any musical instrument, not only do the damaged areas start healing, they become better personalities by feeling more confident and having the courage to fight back or abandon the toxicity.

Present Moment Management

Engaging with music can also be a form of mindfulness, manoeuvring individuals to be fully present and immersed in the experience. Whether listening attentively, playing an instrument, or singing, music can help centre the mind, distract from pain and stress, and promote a state of meditative calm. This mindfulness aspect of music contributes to its healing powers, providing a break from the constant stream of thoughts that can overwhelm us. Yoga is one of the most effective mindfulness techniques that help us to be in the moment. Playing a music instrument is another great way to practice present-moment awareness. Because you cannot daydream or sulk in a toxic thought if you have to play a particular musical instrument in an apt manner. Your mind and heart have to focus on the rhythm, beats, tunes and lyrics to create a soothing output.

Mariann Johnson, mindfulness and wellbeing instructor at the University of Minnesota’s Earl E.Bakken Centre for Spirituality & Healing conducts music & meditation sessions. According to her, mindfully listening to music can help us to pace down, to fully immerse in the present, moment and deeply appreciate music as a boon.

Sharing some of her useful tips on how mindful listening to music helps us function effectively in this fast-paced life.

  1. Select your choice of music piece- Music instruments are key as you need to focus and function on the sound and beats without lyrics. It’s a simple start.

  2. Be in your space- Opt for a place free from interruption or intrusion for listening to music. Such a space should also be comfortable.

  3. Declare the onset of your music listening session- This will help you in deep and focussed listening. Take deep breaths and begin.

  4. Activate your awareness- Sense your body breathing, your every organ functioning and release stiffness in any area of your body. Feel the chair if you are sitting on it or the ground if you are lying on it while listening to music.

  5. Be alert to any observance- You might be drawn to the beat of the music or the soft sound of the instrument in the music. Be aware of any thought or emotion that evokes while listening to that music and notice reactions or responses from any body movement. Allow the to and fro from music to your body and vice versa.

  6. Keep listening- When you continue to focus on listening to the music, allow the sounds to penetrate deep into your mind and let it wash all over you. Closing your eyes while listening to your choice of music will help effective listening.

  7. Once the music piece is over- You must reflect to yourself the entire session and its experience. Feel the relief and peace your body gets. And with this you can better select our next session by analysing the music choice for your last session.

Conclusion

Music's role as a medicine, healer and navigator is multifaceted, impacting patients and individuals on integral elements and layers of the journey called life that comes with its ups and downs. Its universal appeal and ability to evoke and express emotion make it a powerful channel for recovering from clinical conditions, disorders, critical medical conditions, healing from emotional and mental damages and well-being. In a world fraught with challenges and stress, music has proven results that make it one of the most beautiful forms of medicine and a primary agent for treatment and healing followed by doctors, medical practitioners and well-being experts around the world.
