Mirage.
By Pranjli Chaturvedi
Your tears slip off your dry skin, from the pink tint of your cheeks
Your eyes are filled with tears now.. And your eyebrows are stiff.
Like a mirage in a desert, your tears are fake.
It is all another illusion to my eyes.
I should know you are lying.
For you have before, and I told myself you would again.
I do not wish to step closer to you with all the tiny strength left in my body, for I know it will only betray me.
The tears are fake.
The ocean in your eyes is a lie my eyes tell my heart to reach the painful yet similar comfort you offer me.
But it is a waste of my time. Yes, it is..
Your fingers scratch your temples.
You have shaken the desert, and the sand has moved while more of those tears escape.
But it is a mirage, right? There is no real water.
The tears are fake.
Perhaps I should stay away. Yes, I should.
So now you let out a warm sigh, the heat wave of that desert.
Why? Do you want me to lose my strength further?
Slowly, you frustrate. I did not react, and you lost the attention you once had.
I see those tears fading away.
Your eyebrows are stiffer than before, and your lips are turning upwards.
So I was right.
It was a mirage.
Yes, it was.
And with each shift in the pattern of sand, I now see the multiple faces you had.
Mirage.
