Midnight Sunset

By Peter Ellis

A coffee and a year later

Not quite where I thought I'd be

Turned in and out by the currents of time

But feeling lighter now, and floating free

A kiss from the midnight sunset

Brittle barriers burned away

To remind me of the love at my core

That was trapped within an ego

Now asphyxiating on the floor

From its remains I rebuilt myself

Raw, naked and afraid

I gave grace to who came before

And all the progress he'd made

In the embrace of the midnight sunset

I found a place safe to be

So authentic, childish and silly

It'd get a cringe out of teenage me

The sun would often look upon my being

And question their part they played

How else can I say that their light

Is how blooming flowers are made?

A coffee and a year later

And everything isn't said and done

Was it the full story

Or was it only chapter one?
