Merciless

By Aditi Sayil

The whips cut ruthlessly through my skin,

Like daggers, drawing blood.

It’s rhythm, a vengeful ballad,

Victims know it well.

I don’t wince, only clench my teeth harder,

Preparing myself for more.

Blows after blows,

My body, tired, sore and numb.

I was expected to cry, shriek, wail

Sad for them,

I just smiled back,

And offered a beguiling wink.

That unsatisfied anger,

Those hungry lustful eyes,

Compile into appalling behemoths,

Who devour me,

Ripping off my sanity.

As the dusk blends into night,

My anger into rage,

I hold my ground,

While they continue to vandalize me,

Cackling with laughter at their progress.

When limits had been crossed,

And vows had been broken,

Force revved inside me,

And my strength loosened the chains.

They went crashing on them,

I lunged with renewed energy,

My moves surprising me,

As I brought each one down.

When the sun rose,

I felt totally spent,

My tears mixed with blood,

And my body, bereft of power.

Accidentally I dropped a burning candle standing by,

Slowly and steadily, I watched my predators die.
