Matrimony

LO textbooks say that goals are something that have to be realistic That's what separates them from dreams and wishes

But what is realistic anymore

After all what we’ve been through

Nothing seems realistic anymore

Because you were my dream infiltrated into reality

You were the wish upon every candle and star

And specks of dust in the breeze of rays of sunlight

That glided through the darkness of life

Like the hand from Heaven plunging into the underworld

To resuscitate me.

You held my face and gently breathed life into my mouth

Like a parent blowing onto their baby’s teething gums

To soothe it, comfort it

And yet even when our lips never touched

Our souls did.

I depict it like a molten golden infinity sign

Moving like lackadaisical liquid ink and

The lazy overlapping of oceanic waves

Or making love at first light,

Glinting with shards of understanding from broken souls

And battered hearts

Weaving into one stained glass window for both me and you.

When you left you left my mouth gaping

Fighting on land after being woken from the ocean’s bed

My soul gasping for breath

Not my breath but

Yours

For mine seems so insufficient

And the irony is not lost in me

That it upheld me for 17 years prior.

I try to run to the ocean

But circumstantial shackles seize my ankles

I tried to pull away

But my fingers merely slipped through the silk-like sand

And pulled me through the solidified ground labeled consequence Of both my actions and yours.

The journey was detrimental and

I am tortured with life without you, back beneath the surface within A shadow-casted, depression-clad prison called my bedroom and my broken brain But with a needle-like glint of golden still streaked through my being Like a thread ever-connecting my heart to yours

Like the red string theory

But for lovers who weren’t given a fair enough chance at love.

I still hold my piece of our stained glass

I admire it every night when the world’s asleep but I know you’re awake

I allow my tears to grace its surface and caress your face

In such an intimate way my hands were never allowed to

I let my heart deflate love like a sponge expelling all crevices of water

And allow my love pour like rivers out my body and down my chest

Like a sticky and permanently staining declaration that I care,

Blood like crimson wax of an unbroken seal on an official document, that being The marriage certificate we shall never ink.

I allow it to beat in time with my red-reflected tears

And let it stick to my limp and exhausted face and shaking hands.

Each droplet crystalises as raw emotion on the Thread of Gold

Like evaporated dew on a twisted vine.

How natural this love is.

How human and dehumanising and beautifully painstaking

How forbidden yet how unstoppable

How wrong yet so unconventionally correct

So marginalised with abnormal ramifications, yet so pure and precious

Addiction in the utmost sweetest form where rush and enthrallment is nirvana. It was the understanding of our present lives and the regardless love despite it, And the acknowledgment of our pasts and the connection because of it

That a future with us would be a future our world isn’t ready for.

A future only you and I understood

Before the end of the beginning

And anyone else ever would.

But maybe someday

And yes I still talk about a “someday”

I’ll be sitting alone of the ledge of the highest building, overlooking a sunset so magnificent that its departing rays touch my hair and eyelashes and kiss my forehead

And the sky emits gradients especially to impress me, and

The clouds absorb their pastel shades and deeper greys

And the trees darken into silhouettes,

That you'll find me again.

You’d sit beside me

We wouldn’t talk yet because you too are in awe of our scene

You’d understand

You knew I kept the promise I made you

How I’d someday watch the sunset over the city and watch the lights disperse throughout below me because you know how I see beauty and what I find beauty in.

Because with you it was never “What's your favourite colour?”

It was “Who are you beneath your surface and what do colours mean to you.” You’d find me in the way I always wanted you to.

You’ll always find me again.

Because with every sunrise and sunset My golden thread glows for you

An unmissable sign that

Just as sun breathes, here I remain. May all happiness always reside as joy. And that even when I can no longer speak, I shall always love you.
