Matching Dog Pj's

By Hector Lopez Jaime

things always

look good

on the up

& up

til that shit

flushes away

& all that’s left

is memories

that tend to be

cold like bad coffee

bitter like bad wine

leaving your throat

badly dehydrated

nothing lasts forever

& none of it

lasts a lifetime:

one month you’re buying

matching pajamas for dogs

inviting family & friends

into your ever afters

the next it’s over

& done with

so violently

you get whiplash

no need to get

too attached;

hold these earthly passions

as they burn into nasty scars

you’ll grow comfortable with

& then have the strength

to let go
