Dear Reader,
This picture evoked somewhat of an epiphany in me. This is my attempt to lead you there, starting with a splash of symbolism.
That wrinkled, leafless old tree brings to life Expectation. The birds flying away from it are you and I, our friends and families, and the rest of Humankind. And as you’ll notice, the light stretching out into the horizon is steadily brighter as we reach the center. Let that epicenter be Nirvana, our desired destinations.
In my head, the tree wasn’t always this way though.
She didn’t always look like this; formidable, barren and desolate. It was once spring. Birds flocked to her leafy, delightful magnificence, and it gave shade to one and all who wanted refuge in her. But now autumn looks to give way to winter. The facade is now off, and her claws show. She is no more endearing, and the reason is simply because people can now see straight through her.
Her claws had dug in deep, though.
All those birds had fallen prey to her power. Someday or the other, every single one had been ravaged by their innocent trust in her. For they believed that the harsh sun would not find them as long as they were ‘safely’ ensconced in the safety of her bosom.
They even built nests on her.
They did, because they thought she would never let them down. They thought she wouldn’t betray their companions and young ones, who loved them and whom they loved. They thought that if one truly loves someone, if one seeks support from that someone, and if one is lucky enough to get it unconditionally for a significantly long period, that it will last forever. Silly birds.
Silly, silly birds.
They loved that tree. She was home to them. But she wasn’t anymore, and that is now there for all to see. She has shown them that she slowly tears into them, and that the sun wasn’t the real enemy after all. It was always her. Maybe that was the point of the sunshine, they now think. To show them that they could be happy without relying on her. All they needed to do, was spread their wings, and fly.
And fly they did.
Right into their sun.
