Lilies

By Adam Pope

Under stars of twilight

brightening the midnight heavens,

the moon waxes among stars

illuminating a celestial dome.

Across green carpets of Earth,

scents of blooming lilies replace

wilted roses once filled by beauty

torn away by a vile blizzard.

Above stand kin pines, oaks, and willows

with starlight shining

as if fireflies filled the branches

and twigs of spring leaves.

When I cried to keep us,

you stared as I drowned.

Now when I ache, my lilies, trees, and stars

secure me when I’d crumble next to you.
