Life Is Not Always Rainbows and Sunshine

Life is not always rainbows and sunshine,

or flowers and butterflies.

When sadness comes over me,

it’s the pent-up emotions,

the unsaid words,

the unavoidable thoughts.

It’s moving backward as time moves forward.

It’s not knowing what time it is.

It’s being late constantly.

It’s missing appointments, missing occasions,

ghosting everyone I know.

It is strange.

It’s unpredictable.

It’s unfortunate.

It’s clenched fists and dried-up tears.

It’s hiding from myself

and fighting for control.

It’s fighting to breathe.

It’s convincing myself

that everything is okay.

Life is not a fairytale.

It’s crying over and over

for the same reasons.

It’s the constant headaches

and the excruciating pain in my gut.

It’s mental,

but also physical.

It’s sadness over happiness.

It’s meds over happy meals.

It’s numbness over joy.

It’s fear over contentment.

It’s tiring.

It’s consuming.

Consuming me in a black hole

Seeming no way out.
