Liberation From Servitude

By Aranya Mandal

At long last we are united as a nation, be it so on a blood-soaked land,

we surely have been liberated but at a price by fate’s hand.

Freed we have been but we must not forget the sacrifices that had to be made

That won us this air that reeks no longer of subservience.

Let it be known to our fallen soldiers that the blood they shed was not in vain,

that the dream they died for has been achieved even through all the pain,

let it be known to our fallen brethren that far from being forgotten,

their names have  been written down in the pages of history in golden.

Been enslaved for over a century , been exploited to no ends,

The only thing we could hope for was a miracle from the heavens.

Eventually we realised that no miracle from heaven would occur

and that our freedom was ours alone to fight for and reconquer.

And we did win at last, but even our freedom came at a cost,

through the havoc of partition the lives of many were lost.

So let us not allow their sacrifices be futile and fulfil their last wish,

and  make our nation greater than any there is.
