Ladies of Rome

I want to rip the flesh from my bones

Scraping at the surface of my humanity

I want my future back, so hopeful

I would scoop my eyeballs out to blind myself from the light of today’s day

I want my soul back

Oh how l'd search for it through tendons and muscle

Pulling them like strings on a violin

A crying instrument singing elegies

I want my laughter back

Even if I have to pull my teeth out to find it

Somewhere she lays

Deep in my belly

Empty it is and hollow I am

I want my smile back

I'd tear my lips off to look for it

Buried somewhere between the soft flesh, always puckered and shut

I crave for my words to fall on solid ground

And I would pull my vocal chords out my throat to find the democracy in my own life

I pull and stretch myself

Reaching for what I was

A butterfly tucking her wings back into her cocoon

Nostalgia is the ruins of Rome

And I am Livia Drusilla

Ruins displayed for hungry eyes

And warded off to my own.
