Kindle of Hope

When I circled the nuptial fire,

holding his finger tightly,

I believed his hands

would only cup my cheek.

I trusted that his eyes

would only glance at me with affection.

I knew his palms

would hold mine.

But as though someone had cast a spell,

his wishes of compassion,

his dreams of eternity,

and his letters of admiration

all vanished.

My agony started to unfold.

My future started to crumble.

His hands trucelently reddened my cheeks.

His eyes stared at me

as though I was worthy only of fire.

His palms were fated

to hold a knife against my throat,

only to steal my voice forever.

Why? I asked.

Maybe because I had poured life

into a forlorn daughter,

not his wanted heir.

There was no justice bearer

I did not beseech,

no deity I did not implore,

yet no prayer answered,

no letter replied.

I was wiping my tears

of endurance

when he uttered

that he had gotten a ring of promises

for his beloved

and severed the finger

that once wore his ring.

That night I set his bed ablaze,

not for vengeance,

but for that version of me

he tried to reduce to ashes.
