കാവുംഭാഗത്തെ കേളുകൊച്ചാട്ട൯
'ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് മുമ്പെ ഉച്ചതിരിഞ്ഞു'.
മുറ്റത്തെ മൂപ്പിലാ൯നെല്ലിച്ചോട്ടിൽ
ഇച്ഛയിമാരെല്ലാം സൊറ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
"കേളുകൊച്ചാട്ടന്റെ പൊറുതിക്ക്,
നാടുമൊഴവൻ ആണുങ്ങളൊണ്ട്."
അമ്മിണിയിച്ഛയി ചിറിയിലെ വെറ്റനീര്,
തോർത്തോണ്ടു തൊടച്ചു.
"കനാലുപണിക്ക് വന്നേരം
രാമന്റടുത്തൂന് മാറുന്നില്ലാരുന്നു."
ലീലച്ഛായിയടക്കം പറഞ്ഞു.
"കൊയത്തിന്റന്നെല്ലാം
കോവാലനെയാരുന്നു നോട്ടം."
മണിയിച്ഛയി ചുറ്റും നോക്കി കുറുകി.
"എറങ്ങിനെടാ എന്റെ മുറ്റത്തൂന്നു എല്ലായെണ്ണവും."
വെള്ളപുതച്ചു കിടക്കുന്ന
കേളുകൊച്ചാട്ടനലറി.
കൂട്ടികൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ വന്ന,
അപ്പനപ്പൂപ്പന്മാരു ചിരിച്ചു.
കൊച്ചുങ്ങളെല്ലാം
ചരലിനിടയിൽ കൊഴിഞ്ഞനെല്ലിക്ക
തെരഞ്ഞു.
കേളുകൊച്ചാട്ടന്റെ പൊറുതി,
വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും പിഴയ്ക്കുമെന്നോർത്തവരെല്ലാം
പിറുപിറുത്തു.
കനവുകളിൽ,
അവരിലെ പെണ്ണുങ്ങൾ
കേളുകൊച്ചാട്ടനു പായ വിരിച്ചവരും
ആണുങ്ങൾ കറുമ്പിയിച്ഛയിക്കിരുട്ടിൽ,
മുറുക്കാൻ വച്ചവരുമായിരുന്നു.
തോട്ടുവെള്ളത്തിന്റിടയിലെ
തണുപ്പുകുടിച്ചു ചില്ലുകുപ്പിക്കുള്ളിൽ
കൊല്ലങ്ങളുറങ്ങിയ വീഞ്ഞുപോലെ,
കൊറോനും കൊറത്തിയു-
മെന്നും രാത്രിക്ക്
പതഞ്ഞു പൊന്തുമാരുന്നു.
ഇന്നുവരെയാർക്കും കഴിയാത്തവണ്ണം,
ഉടുമുണ്ടിന്റെ ചൂടുപറ്റി-
യവർ കെട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ചു കിടക്കുമ്പോൾ,
കറുമ്പിയുടെ ദുർനടപ്പ്
കേട്ടുകേൾവികൾ ചൊല്ലി
ഊറിചിരിച്ചുറങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.
ഉറ്റവരും ഉടയവരും പെറ്റപൈതങ്ങളേതുമില്ലാത്ത കറുമ്പി,
അടക്കത്തിനു വന്നവർക്കെല്ലാം
കഞ്ഞി വിളമ്പാൻ ദേഹണ്ണിച്ചു.
മീൻ ചിതമ്പലോളം പോന്ന താലി,
കറുത്ത ചരടിൽ മിന്നി.
ചാവെടുക്കാൻ നേരം
കറമ്പി അരികത്തു വന്നു പറഞ്ഞു,
"കൊച്ചാട്ടൻ പേടിക്കാതെ പൊക്കോ.
ഇവന്മാർക്ക് മറുപടി പറയുന്നത് എന്റെ അരിവാളും,
അവളുമാർക്ക് എന്റെ നാവുമായിരിക്കും."
അപ്പൂപ്പന്മാരുടെ പുറകെ
ഒതുങ്ങി ചിരിച്ചോണ്ട് കേളു
തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കി നടന്നു.
കെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കാതെയുറങ്ങാൻ കഴിയാത്തയന്നുരാത്രി
കേളൂന്റെ പൊറുതി,
മുറ്റത്തെ നെല്ലിമരത്തെ വട്ടംപിടിച്ചു,
പുതുമണ്ണിൽ കുഴിച്ചു വെച്ച
തെങ്ങുംതൈയിലകളനങ്ങുന്നതും നോക്കി നിന്നു.
അടഞ്ഞ നെല്ലിയിലകൾക്കിടയിൽ നിന്നും,
രാവു മെല്ലെ പൊഴിച്ചിട്ടു.
നിലാവും നെല്ലിക്കയും.
The English translation of the Malayalam poem is given below.
*Karambi
Kelu*kochattan of *Kavumbhagam
Passed away untimely.
Women gathered there,
Sat under the age-old
Amla tree and chattered.
“The wife of Kelukochattan
Has affairs across this area.”
Amminiy*ichayi wiped
The betel leaves juice
On her lips with a towel.
“She was not even
Dare to move way
From Raman, when
She came for
The construction
Of *canals.”
Leelayichayi whispered.
“She was eyeing at
Kovalan, during
The paddy reaping
Days.”
Maniyichayi was looking
Around and cooing.
“Everybody, get out
Of my courtyard!”
Kelukochattan, who
Was covered with
White sheet screamed.
The ancestors who
Came to take him
Along with them
Laughed.
Children were
Searching for fallen
Amla in the gravel.
Those who
Thought that
Kelukochattan’s wife
Will go astray
Again and again
Started murmuring.
Though, in their dreams
Women among them
Spread carpets
For Kelukochattan,
And men kept
Betel leaves
For Karumbiyichayi.
Like the age-old booze
In a glass bottle,
Which drank
The coldness under
The deep waters
Of a stream,
*Kuravan and *kurathi
Used to froth
Every night.
They used to
Laugh at the
Gossips about Karambi,
When they used to
Lie down, hugging
Each other under
Their own *mundu
Like none
Had ever done.
Karambi, who has nobody
As kith and kin,
Was cooking hard
To feed the ones
Who came for
The funeral.
The *thaali, which
Was just as a scale
Of a fish,
In a black thread
Sparkled.
When the body
Was about to take
For cremation
She came near and said:
“Kochatta, you go without any fear.
My sickle will respond
To these men and
My tongue will do the job
To these women.”
Smiled Kelu was walking
Along with his ancestors
And was often
Looking back.
The night in which
Sleep couldn’t attain
Without the hug,
Kelu’s wife hugged
The Amla tree in
Their courtyard
And was looking at the
Rustling of leaves
Of the coconut palm sapling,
Which was newly planted
On the grave of Kelu.
From the closed
Amla leaves,
The night had
Showered,
Both twilight and amla.
