Jasmine

My son took the roof

panels off my

Jeep today.

I got cross at first

because my barely

under control

hair, that I can’t wash in

the shower until my

post op compression stockings are

allowed to come off,

started flying about, banshee style

in the warm wind and the

air con ineffectively battled

the 35-degree afternoon heat.

The dust got in my eyes

and I could smell

horse piss in the stables

as I drove past.

Just like we always do

when the sun has been

on it all day and the

flies have had a field day.

I got cross because

he didn’t ask,

he just did it.

Later, driving home from the

hospital by myself after

more stitches were sewn into

my being to stem

the blood, I was glad he’d taken

the liberty to free my

jeep of its ceiling,

as driving through the quiet night,

carried on the breeze,

the scent of jasmine

made me cry.

Twice.
