JACARANDA SEASON
When the wind blows wildly
the purple tears;
the soft mauve rain
the sun sleeps; silently sentinel
as the jacaranda sends
a thousand floral notes
to friends since forgotten,
to weary workers on the wharf
to people — heads covered, dodging puddles
standing watch over summer from dim lit doorways
for a short while
the streets become a meadow
Africa; where a rainbow can be captured
in your palm, and the staccato beat
of rain on tin roofs fills your sleep
with dreams of roaming free
