Influence of The K-pop Industry

By Zarna

When the world got introduced to the World Wide Web, it started turning into, as Marshal McLuhan said, a "global village," a term he coined in his book The Gutenberg Galaxy. He argued that globalization has resulted in the world shrinking, that "Time has ceased and space has vanished." It also means people of different cultures intermingling with each other and discovering similar interests. One such topic of discussion is Korean pop music, more commonly known as K-pop.

In recent years, k-pop has been a hot topic amongst GenZ. Their audience consists of all age groups, of course, but their primary audience is GenZ. Some reasons for their exacerbating popularity are their unique style of distributing the music in their songs, the visually satisfying music videos, the fashion, and the overall production quality. It is all so different from what was in the market before k-pop.

K-pop groups have varying numbers of members depending on the agency they are signed to, look like dolls, their fashion blurs the boundaries of gender norms, many produce their own music and most songs include vocal, rap, and dance all in one frame. This creates excitement amongst people who are looking for something different and more entertaining. K-pop agencies mainly focus on fan service that helps form a connection between the fans and the artists, and can even go as far as feeding the unrealistic fantasies of the fans. It is a toxic yet fantastic marketing strategy because fantasy sells if the art doesn't. Fans spend too much time and money to keep up with their favorite artists which, in the end, benefits the companies. Some fans realize it sooner or later but many find it hard to snap out of it since it is an escape from reality as it fulfills their fantasies.
