In The Woods

By Carol Ann Wells

Deep inside the woods, where nature thrives,

live trees of all sizes, shapes, and kinds.

They stretch, and they bend, they twist and strive,

the Oak, the Maple, the Birch, the Pine.

On ground lined lushly with mossy green,

sheltered by limbs and leaves intertwined,

life’s cycle of rebirth and requiem

stirs your soul as it quiets your mind.

God’s heartbeat throbs in this sacred place

compelling the elaborate dance

from long ago in this ageless space,

missed by outsiders’ casual glance.

There, in the midst of the ebb and flow,

feel the air move and see the trees quake.

Caught in the rhythm, your heart’s beat slows,

swells with emotion so heavy it aches.

Seed births bud blooms to blossom life flows,

thrilling, thriving, you hear your heart pound!

Blossom fades, wilts, and falls as life goes,

life’s debris strewn on fertile, rich ground.

The limbs, leaves, flowers, and logs that lay,

dead where they fell to the forest floor,

replenish the earth as they decay,

the balance of life ever restored.

In the woods, nestled in God’s embrace,

in his soothing and sheltering care,

you are nurtured in that holy place;

contemplation, communion are there

in the woods.
