If I Had a Daughter

Original Submission by Poe Haythar Sunn

If I Had a Daughter

If I had a daughter, I’d warm her little hands and heart,

so she can hold her dear ones close to her

pillars that brave tornadoes of uncertainty and doubts;

encompass them in her own quilt patchwork of love.

I’d say, “My sweet, won’t you slow down?”

I promise the world is waiting for your time.

If I had a daughter, I’d serenade her to sleep

with incandescent tales of those who’d shown me kindness,

so she can hold her hand out to the ones staying afloat.

I’d hope the stars in her eyes scintillate,

bright enough to navigate the smoke and mirrors.

If I had a daughter, I’d teach her

there’s more to the world than her own snow globe:

seize whatever chance she gets to give back,

pennies and dimes can’t measure up

to the weight of her smile.

She’ll be surprised to know the trail of daisies she leaves,

an everlasting sillage.

If I had a daughter, I’d tell her to revel in the present,

let go of the weight of the world she can’t bear on her own.

One day she’ll find the one who will anchor her

with threads as soft as wool,

with threads as pure and untarnished as gold.

The one who will keep tending to her flame

in the rain and in the cold,

when she’s venturing out to sea,

the one she calls her home.
