Idle Hands

It is strange: the mind — its ego and its shame, how it holds the two together like a wick cradling flame. For there are moments I believe my writing is a gift. A shift in destiny, intended to fall upon others as testimony.

Soon wrecked by the insecurity that seeps in, a cousin to comparison — much like thievery — a sin.

Regardless of the victor between fire and rope, I hold little hope in anything disproving how I have wasted them both. For I seldom bring pen to paper, or fingertip to key. I sit and ponder if the real issue is me.

If I am gifted, it is a gift I discard, and if there were a bar to reach, I've been thoroughly barred.

If not all of that then I waste my mind, for what intelligent creature twists over its hind, to stew upon a question when it's thoroughly blind — to the world and its standards: have I a gift or a phase? A blessing or a burial? The question's burdened me for days.

If my gift is a flame, and my lack of one the wick, then I suppose I am the wax, forever undipped. Moulded to a candle that simply sits, continuously unlit.

Whichever is true, my ego or shame, they're equally there and both likely to blame. Yet it's my lack of doing that has left me in pain — a waste of my gift or a waste of my brain? In all of this, I've chosen to refrain: from something that brings me joy, and an expression to my pain.

Whether a rarity, or a subpar achievement, my writing and I have encountered bereavement. A lack of habit, and childish distractions, all of this has stemmed from my failing in actions. Reading this back, I think I've decided — though part of my mind will always be divided. This act in itself is accomplishment though, and I’m afraid that the answer to my question? It’s one I'll never truly know.
