I Wonder Why

By Rimsha Shaikh

The saddest word

If you ask me is “Almost”

It tells you the saddest tales

Of a grief you have never seen

But something you’ll never forget

“We almost saved him”

“He almost loved me”

“She almost passed the test”

“He almost survived”

“They almost met”

It's like an ongoing story

With a never-ending end

As we know what to expect

But aren’t ready to accept.

Why is it so

That we can’t let it go

The guilt of almost having something

The regret if letting it go

Laughter isn’t remembered

As much as tears are

Perhaps this is why I always

Think of how I lost you

But can’t think of the time

The time we laughed together

I wonder why…
