“I will take/You took”

by Tumi Mogari

I got so used to you taking that I didn’t notice when what you took became parts of me. Fistfuls of fat I didn’t think I would miss and

entire clumps of hair,

you ripped away –

you would not be satisfied until all of me

was inside of you.

You were not gentle, I did not expect this of you

- perhaps if you were,

I would have been more surprised and taken notice sooner.

I wonder how you would write this… the way I began to consume you. You were not quick to give so I had to learn to take for I would have gone hungry otherwise. It was easier to do so shrouded in the darkness of night as in the day you made sure you kept your distance. You once joked that children were parasites, and I think I took that too literally. You became too comfortable with the idea of me starving so I had to change my diet. A want for attention and care became all-encompassing to the point that once I swallowed a piece of you by mistake, it became the only way I knew to be satiated, even temporarily.

I am missing my left arm now,

You have scraped my head clean down to the bone.

I notice bite marks on my leg

from where I may have been able to

dislodge

your jaw from it in my sleep.

I am of the belief that mothers are the figures that provide, not the fathers. For there is nowhere she may go that I will not find her. She would not provide shelter when I looked for respite so now, I look for it in the inverse. Perhaps once she is gone, I will be satisfied – I am not certain. But until then, I will comfort myself, with just

one more bite.
