I Trust the Ache

I do not trust the love that falls asleep,

once held,

once named,

once folded into skin.

I trust the ache

with no mouth left to weep,

that still keeps breathing

where the ribs cave in.

I trust the wound that will not beg for cure,

the dark that guards

what daylight cannot claim.

Some longing stays

because it is too pure

to shrink into a body, touch, or name.

It does not ask for hands.

It asks for none.

It lives where every softer thing has died.

And what could not be kissed, or kept, or won,

I trust the one that never wore a face,

yet ruined every mirror from within.
