I Despise Fairytales

By Raima Joseph

It all started

In a crummy old room,

With a big brown book

And a slow HDR zoom.

A magic mirror,

An abandoned slipper,

A curse forever

,It all began right here.

Once, there was a damsel in distress

Until an old hag with a stick

Shimmered and glimmered

On things that made her life, sick.

All decked up she goes to a ball

And finds herself a Royal fella.

Dreams that she wished for

Finally came true for Cinderella.

Little did she know that

Life's not a ball for everyone.'

Bibbidy Bobbidy Boo

'Won't work in reality, honey-bun.

Then there's the old prune

Who created a pernicious pippin,

All because of some insecurities

She had with the colour of her skin.

This one's of a curly haired maiden

Who finds her true love

While singing to a well

And giving vocal lessons to a dove?

Such a drag

Was the tale of SnowWhite.

Accepting food from a creepy stranger

Is what is shown to kids, am I right?

Now comes a dame

Who falls prey to a spindle.

To keep her highness from sleeping forever,

They all try to burn the wheels in a kindle.

Gift of beauty

Gift of song

A gift of self-control

Could have saved her all along.

In Aurora's life, far from reality

There isn't such a thing as morning breath.

Girlie got married to a prince

Who saved her from a sleep like death.

Dear, oh dear!

That's a whole lot of rhyme

Can you believe all this took place

Once upon a time?
