I Am Sorry, My Love

I ache for you like a river aches for the sea

with a pull that bends my bones,

with a hunger that gnaws at every shore I’ve tried to root in.

You whisper to me in the quiet hours,

your voice softer than the space between stars,

and I long to follow.

I long to let go,

to slip into your arms like a shadow into dusk,

weightless, endless, finally at rest.

But there are hands that still cling to mine,

warm and trembling,

anchoring me to this brutal, bright world.

There are eyes that search for me in the morning,

lips that shape my name like a prayer,

and I

I stay.

I stay, though my soul is a bird

beating its wings against the cage of my ribs.

I stay, though your promise of silence

echoes in my blood like a hymn.

Forgive me, my dark darling.

Forgive this weak, human heart,

still tethered by love,

still afraid of the void it claims to crave.
