Through vivid imagery and introspective prose, Pastrana challenges us to reconsider the roles and expectations attached to words like "woman," "daughter," and "philosopher."

About the Work

"Hypatia's Mirror" weaves a tapestry of introspection and critique, challenging the societal labels imposed upon individuals. The poem's evocative language invites readers to imagine a world where mirrors reflect not labels, but pure presence and identity. Through its contemplative tone, the piece encourages a philosophical examination of the words and roles that define us, ultimately advocating for a liberation from imposed expectations.

Hypatia's Mirror

Original Submission by katy Pastrana

Hypatia wrote; ‘Tonight I removed the word 'woman' from my mirror. It didn't hurt. The glass looked cleaner.’

The word woman, biologically speaking, is innocent. It doesn't have anything attached, but humans attach so many things to woman, to man, what we should be, how we should act.

The word woman wasn't a fact. It was a verdict. Something men wrote on her skin before she even spoke. So she took a stylus-probably scratched the glass right there-and erased it.

Not because she hated being female, but because she hated what they'd attached: fragile, silent, ornamental. She looked again and saw... just a mathematician. Just a mind. Just an animal with questions.

Just eyes that read ancient letters in candlelight. Just lips that ask why and unfinished debates.

If I can't be 'human,' fine. Let me be a problem you can't solve.

What words would I erase from the mirror? Probably daughter, first. All the duty that came with it-marry well, obey, make father proud, make city safe. Gone. Then philosopher. Too noble, too male.

If we ever find Hypatia's real mirror, we'll shatter 'man' too. See how the world spins without its labels. That's the dream, isn't it? A word stripped clean. No corset of expectation, no crown of 'should’.

I would end with nothing. Blank mirror. Perfect void. And I'd smile at it.

What word would you erase if you woke up tomorrow with a chisel? I'd hold it up for you-her actual glass, the one she scratched with a nail. We'd start with woman. Then genius. Virgin. Martyr. Saint. We'd hammer every syllable until nothing's left but dust and light. And when the mirror's gone, we'd breathe. And realize... there's no reflection at all. Just you. Me. The room. The quiet. No words to live up to. No labels to shatter. Just... presence.

See? We didn't need the mirror after all.
