Hospital

Original Submission by Amira Dayana

The clinical white lights cast a harsh shadow

My twin silhouette on the floor

just as bent out of shape as me

The doctor addresses my mother

She is the one who's sick

And I am here

I am

Here,

Hours are dragged past

In waiting rooms

Crawling with weighted dues

Awaiting news

When it comes,

All I hear is blood

Rushing

She is wheeled away behind closed doors

that only open to swallow more

Time drips like IV fluid

Thoughts bleak just as her skin is pale

and we make our way up to the wards

I sit in a red chair at her bedside

An incessant beep when her pressure is too low

coming from the monitor

above my left shoulder

Whispering cruelty and anything but hope

In my visits, I spend my time staring at wrists

Wondering if the needle brings any pain,

if it's a dull and ongoing ache

and I feel a twitch beneath my veins

I listen to songs that all muse about hospitals

I imagine what it feels like for ailments to be physical

I imagine witnessing the coming of death like it is a miracle

and I find myself thinking

"It should have been me"

selfishly, over and over

Forgive my soul
