I am a weight standing at five feet

I did not ask to cry,

I did not ask to bleed,

I did not ask to breathe

But I am the reason you're all you'll ever be

I'm a parting gift— or more the reason than the effect

I am a mark of a lifetime of debt

A shadow of a phantom, his likeness in mine

A painting and name so cruel to remind

Yet I was but a child

But I knew the circumstances of my being

With a paternal absence that had me believing

Oh burden be

As you wear two pairs of shoes, on your hands and feet

My teenage years are steeped in reported rebellion

I love too little and I am cool to the touch

I ask for too little and I want for too much

But I never wanted to be the weight on your backside

The hole in your pocket or a waste of your time

Sometimes I still feel like a child playing solitaire

When my loneliness was mine only to bear

But I still won't ask for something that I won't get

And I will not ask, I will not dare

How much glare can you see in my longing stare?
