HOPE

My darling child what shall I leave

you from this troubled world?

I leave you hope that when the night

closes in and your courage fails,

your heart will know that there is still

a place where the light breaks through.

For I have seen a red balloon on

a child’s grave flutter like a flag

of defiance against the abyss

and somewhere In Bakmut a piano

note rises from a broken building

and a world away a man sells flowers

as death falls from the sky.

Never, never give up!

Listen!

There are birds singing in the storm.
