Honey or Lemons

I feel it gnawing on my bones everyday,

the ugliness circling through my being.

I tell myself,

I am made of empathy,

but I ignore that I am also judgeful,

and I am as equal parts mean.

Who am I to look with such disapproving eyes?

To people who do not concern me in the slightest,

to people who seem more fortunate than me;

it slowly seeps out of my soul.

The more I try to justify,

searching for a way to mask the insecurity stemming from within;

I try to make it go away,

try to look towards lighter days,

hoping for another way,

for me to dream —

running,

far away from the hatred, the sorrow, and all the resentment;

but you cannot separate honey from lemons.
