Hazel Eyes
By Anita Ruthjersen
I was born with hazel eyes
Hazel eyes both brown and green
Eyes that were exploring and new
But not before unseen
I grew into those hazel eyes,
The ones very unique to me,
They changed with the seasons
And the fall of the leaves
They grew wider with age
as they started to see
exploring and glowing
with the change of scene
But these hazel eyes grew dull over time,
They hardened and grew tired with grime,
I rubbed at them trying to clear the fog,
But the haze grew deeper with every year along.
I did not know why my hazel eyes were gone,
The warmth they used to bring seemingly all gone,
The life behind them seemed to fade
With each and every passing day
Maybe it was the shit on tv,
Or the overwhelmingness of brushing my teeth,
But soon I refused to look into those hazel eyes,
I begged them to stop watching me cry.
But one day I fell in love with a different pair of hazel eyes,
They didn’t seem dull or quiet,
They were serene and bright like a bird seen from a great height.
And they too said they loved mine,
‘My beautiful hazel eyes’
‘My wonderful earth like eyes’
But how could they see stand the sight,
Of eyes so dull and without life?
But there was life there,
Just creeping in the near,
And soon I looked back into my own hazel eyes
And found something I forgot was mine
I was born with beautiful hazel eyes,
Hazel eyes both green and brown,
Eyes that could see something new,
Even when they weren’t attuned.
Now I love another set of hazel eyes,
The ones that are green and blue,
The ones that pulled back my hue,
And remind me of the love I have for you.
