Golden age

I spent 7,639 miles to arrive at my destination

New places, new faces

And new unspoken rules I didn't know yet

I was trying to be the girl

Perfect and committed

But committed to what — and to who?

I answered every call

Heart beating fast

A nervousness I couldn't name

They called me names

I heard every word

And put a smile on my face anyway

Every part of me was unwilling

For two years, every Saturday

But I yet dimmed myself over and over

And then one morning I woke up

Got dressed

And decided I had wasted enough of my time

I entered my nineteenth year

And made one promise

That I would prioritise myself

And do things that makes me happy

I became detached

Stopped answering every call straight

Stopped over explaining myself

And took myself on a solo date

I started giving myself permission to be seen

I entered competitions

Not because I would win

But because I could finally make my own decision

I stopped waiting to be included

And planned my own journey

I decided to apply reciprocity

I give exactly what I receive

This is my golden age

A brand new day

Free from your judgment

And finally — just mine
