Glasses

By Aaishpreet Bajaj

{The scene opens on a busy market street.}

Drishya Rai: Dad… isn’t that Akshay going over there?

His father: Where are your glasses? I told you—this is an unfamiliar city. If you don’t see properly, how will you recognize people?

Drishya: I forgot… You know how it is, Dad. I’m not used to wearing glasses. They give me a headache.

His father: I know, but you’ll have to get used to them, right? It’s always uncomfortable at first, but then everything becomes fine.

Drishya: Okay, Dad… I’ll be careful next time.

(Drishya picks up his glasses. As soon as he puts them on, he realizes his father is gone.)

Drishya: Dad… Dad… Dad!

(After searching everywhere in vain, Drishya falls to his knees, holding his aching head. He takes off his glasses. A moment later, he feels a hand on his shoulder.)

His father: You took off your glasses again… You’ll never change, will you?

Drishya: What could I do, Dad? My head started hurting again… I had to take them off.

His father: Alright, no problem. Come on, let’s go home.

(Drishya stands up and starts walking with his father. When he tries to turn right, his father stops him.)

His father: The right side isn’t always right… We need to go left.

Drishya: I’d have lost my way again, Dad.

His father: If everything looks blurry, how will you ever find your way home?

Drishya: For me, seeing things blurry is fine, Dad… After all, home is wherever you are.
