Ghats of Kashi: The Abode of Eternal Peace

Kashi, also known as the city of Moksha, is not merely just a city but a labyrinth of life, hope and tranquility. At the heart of the city, reside its most magnificent ghats, draped in enigma and serenity. Ghats are not just stones descending into the holy river, but stories etched in time, embankments clutching not just the sacred water, but the rich history and the obscure dance of life and death and the ultimate feeling of Santosh (contentment). Where the sacred incense mingles with the cremated smoke, the ghats of Kashi blur the line between the material and mystical. With over 84 ghats welcoming the Ganges, kashi bows to Shiva itself. Each ghat represents a tapestry woven by the enchanting cosmos.

Dashashwamedh Ghat, which literally translates to “the ghat bearing the sacrifices of ten horses in anticipation of Lord Shiva’s arrival,” resonates to the vibration of the divine Ganga aarti where the soul surrenders to the Maa Ganga and offers light & flowers in reverence. It is a spectacle that merges the individual with the spiritual.

Manikarnika Ghat - “jahan shav bhi Shiv ban jaate hain” - where death is not mourned but celebrated & honoured as the soul transcends into the realm of the unknown & attains salvation (moksh). This ghat is truly the essence that lurks behind the mysticism of death. It chants to the hymn of eternity.

Assi Ghat - a place where the setting sun reflects in the lapping waves and dances to the alluring chants of Om. It is the place where Subah-e-Banaras illuminates a light of warmth and promise into the heart of the city.

The ghats of Kashi are not just ancient tales full of legends but philosophies yearning to give meaning to the life here - at Kashi. They remind us to witness the wonder hidden behind the simple yet beautiful spectacle of nature. The ghats where diyas float with flames flickering over them, just like the brilliant stars reflect in the river, where the morning sun never sets, where the city never sleeps and where Maa Ganga is paid tribute -tell us that there is a lot more to life than we might think.
