From the Macaws Perspective

The afternoon sun was bright. Golden light reflecting of the bars of my cage. They reminded me of the rays of sun that would pierce the jungle canopy and paint the scenery in its rich light. But, instead of confining
me to a space, like these bars do, the light freed me an dexpanded my
space, tenfold.
Lost in thought, memories of my home flooded through my mind, and I occupied myself with these fleeting pieces of freedom. A loud clang
rudely interrupted my thoughts, a jarring contrast to my tranquil paradise I had been taken from. “Look alive bird! None would want to pay for a bird that looks half dead.” My master screamed at me, spittle flying everywhere.
A bird. Just a bird. Hah, how degrading. I was a macaw. Bright blue & yellow feathers, healthy and glossy. Sharp beak and bright eyes that
shimmered like obsidian. If only he would let me out of my prison, how I would teach him a lesson he would never forget.
Master hit the cage again, screaming about profits and losses, as if marketing his failure as a merchant would bring in more customers. I was his only product of note. Fake silks and even faker jewels littered the table in front of him, sparking no interest in the bustling port of the south islands.
“Leave the macaw.” A voice said. Deep and regal, the voice of a leader. I looked up and squinted. The light framed his figure, obscuring his face.
He leaned in closer and his features became distinct. Eyes that shone like diamonds, bluer than the sea that surrounded us, unruly hair, pulled back into a small tail, and tall. Very tall. He towered over my master, who’s arm was still raised, ready to deliver another blow to my cage.
“And who are you to question my ways, hey?” spat master. “A paying customer, my dear man. How much for the macaw?” Masters eyes gleamed with greed, sensing the deep pockets of our guest. “6 gold coins. Throw in 2 silver pieces and I’ll throw in the cage as well.”
Metal clinked and 6 brand new pieces of gold appeared on the table.
“I’ll take him.”
“But what of the cage? How will you contain the beast?” Beast. How rude. I ruffled my feathers and stared at my new master, waiting for his response. “An animal as fine as this, does not need to be contained, it simply needs to be treated with respect.” Oh? Perhaps this new arrangement could be better than my current. “Tch, take him.” Masterno. Crude merchant said. He swept the gold of the table, the funds for a night full of ale and stale bread, now lining his pockets with a heavy responsibility that he did not seem to grasp.
My new master, “Call me James.” He whispered, opened the cage and
settled me onto his shoulder. “ Pleasure doing business with you, my friend.” He said in his smooth voice. The merchant grunted and turned away.
We walked down the docks, passing many ships and vessels. I wondered
which one was ours, if any. My talons gripped into the maroon velvet of masters coat, leaving small indents. His stride was long and confident, screaming ‘I know where I’m going’ to the world.
Shortly after, he stopped at a modest ship. All dark wood and barnacles, it toward over me, even as I sat on the broad shoulders of my new
master. My eyes raked over the ship, decision on its worthiness, pending, when the flag caught my attention.
Black.
With a white skull and cross.
Oh.
I wasn’t sure what surprised me more. The fact that I had been bought by a pirate, or that the pirate was honest and had paid for me fairly.
He was a pirate after all
