FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE: RAYE'S JOURNEY IN WINTER WOMAN

By Ursula Kuever

Raye is an English singer and songwriter of Ghanaian descent. Winter Woman is a song that explores her journey through a painful heartbreak towards self-empowerment. Through use of symbolism, powerful metaphors, and vivid imagery she compellingly illustrates her despair after watching a former partner move on, as well as transforming into a stronger and more resilient woman. The song follows her progress from grief and emotional vulnerability to determination and hope, ultimately suggesting that personal growth is the most powerful form of revenge.

Raye vividly creates a sense of despair at the beginning of the song when she writes, “... I am a silhouette. I am a sob story, standing in the rain in a summer dress..” She uses sibilance to depict a dramatic scene where she is watching her ex-partner move on with another woman soon after their break-up. The repetition of the "s" sound effectively creates a tone of secrecy and danger. She describes herself as a “silhouette” showing that she is now only an outline of the person she once was, which implies that she may have lost her sense of self. Furthermore she uses the phrase “..in the rain in a summer dress..” Which creates a melancholy mood through the use of symbolism because she is wearing a summer dress, symbolising joy, yet she stands in the rain, which symbolises sorrow. This juxtaposition signifies the rain as both her grief for her past relationship and the emotional pain of seeing him with someone else, while also representing her happier self during the relationship through the summer dress. This is impactful on listeners because it makes them empathise with Raye's experience. Additionally she writes, "He wrapped his arms...around her perfect little tiny waist," creating a further sense of despair because of her jealousy for the other woman. This emphasizes society's unrealistic beauty standards. Many women can relate to feeling inferior because of their body image, which hints towards an underlying theme of societal expectations.

During the chorus of the song, the songwriter adopts a cold-hearted persona. She writes,"I'll become the Winter Woman." This phrase shows that she is entering a new phase of her life that is dark, cold and painful, thus calling herself the "Winter Woman" which compares her hardship with the negative connotations about the winter season. It signifies a change in personality as she shifts her focus from being emotional and contemplative to being frigid and withdrawn from her emotions. In addition she writes," Cold girls get by, cold girls won't cry" Implying that for her to get past this difficult time she needs to shut emotions away. These lyrics describe how emotional detachment has become her coping mechanism highlighting a significant shift that many women face after a break-up. Raye furthermore

unveils her new identity by stating, "Maybe I'll become the Queen of Hearts."In this statement she is comparing herself to the infamously cut-throat character from Lewis Caroll's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Queen of hearts is known for being fierce, ruthless and mean, making this an accurate comparison as Raye seems to feel the need to adopt these characteristics in order to protect herself. The use of this metaphor potently helps listeners realise that many of us feel the need to have a hard exterior to shield ourselves from future heartbreak.

The singer creates a sense of hope as she quietly seeks vengeance against her former lover. She writes,"Regret's a bitch, I have a feeling you'll be meeting her soon." The personification of the word "regret" illustrates that Raye hopes for her ex-partner to realize that he has made a grave mistake by leaving her. There is a reference to time, which indicates she plans to become a better version of herself to show him that he is missing out. Later is the song Raye vows to make her name a word her ex will not forget, highlighting a significant moment where she is making a decision to take control of her life again and get revenge by becoming undeniably successful. This moment is important, since Raye is now an accomplished singer and songwriter, it means she is speaking from experience when she tells her listeners that becoming the best version of yourself is the best kind of revenge. Additionally she writes," I will be sad and beautiful" to imply that her sadness will always be there in one way or another, but it will not stop her from being radiant and prosperous. As a result, it creates a sense of hope because her lyrics can be seen as advice to help people find a way back to themselves, and can help motivate them to try and reach their full potential.

In summary, Raye uses a range of techniques to explore the many emotional facets of heartbreak and healing. As the song progresses Raye takes us with her as she transforms from a woman consumed by grief into a woman who is driven and knows her self-worth. Through this journey Winter Woman encourages listeners to embrace personal growth, emphasising that true revenge does not lie in bitterness, but in not letting the pain define you.
