"Oh, look at that beautiful flower vase."

Now look how it fell and shattered into pieces when you reached out to touch it.

The flowers lie scattered among the fragments,

their petals brushing against jagged edges.

Suddenly, it seemed absurd.

You neglected the pieces lying there on the floor.

Useless. Futile. Purposeless.

That is what you call it now.

It had been beautiful from a distance,

untouched,

yet the moment you touched it,

it fell apart.

You admired it when it was whole,

yet fled at its worst.

You turn away, feeling betrayed by its fragility,

and move on to another vase,

dismissing the broken one as meaningless.

"Oh, look at that beautiful flower vase,"

you say,

your hand almost caressing the flowers.

And suddenly, it hits you.

A sense of regret washes over you.

That perhaps your desire to possess its beauty led to its destruction.

That admiration from afar preserves what grasping hands cannot.

That not everything beautiful is meant to be owned.

And perhaps the vase was never betrayed by its fragility-

perhaps it was betrayed

by the one who loved it only

when it was whole.
