Forever in his eyes

He took the blush from summer's rose,

The warmth from vows the young compose;

He dimmed the names that once would burn

Like stars for which the lost hearts yearn.

And many a love I thought would stay

He wore to shadows, day by day.

I watched the seasons bend and sweep

Like mourners pacing half-asleep;

Each golden memory, bright and fair,

Became a ghost of what was there.

The hours I spent in want and ache

Were offerings Time was glad to take.

For oh, my heart has loved in vain,

Has kissed the thorn and kept the pain;

Has chased through dusk a distant light

That vanished with the coming night.

And often I have reached above

For some impossible kind of love.

A love untouched by grief or end,

A fate no cruel years could bend;

Yet every treasure I would claim

Time marked and carried from the flame.

The more I begged, the less was mine,

As sand escapes the grasping line.

Then came a night both still and deep,

When weary stars forgot to weep;

And there beside the autumn air

He stood, as though he'd always been there.

No trumpet called, no heavens stirred,

Yet all my silent soul was heard.

And strange it was, for when he near,

The clock no longer filled with fear.

Its hands, once sharp as winter's knife,

Seemed gentler in the dark of life.

The moments lingered, soft and slow,

Like candlelight on falling snow.

The hours no longer fled like rain,

Nor left me counting loss again;

For in his gaze I came to see

That Time could not steal all from me.

What fades was never meant to stay,

Though Time may bear its bloom away.

But love made true by tested years,

By patient hope and faithful tears,

Grows deeper where the roots descend

Beyond the reach of mortal end.

And now I know what once I missed:

Time steals the blossom, not the wish.

It steals the echo, not the song;

It steals the road, but not how long

Two hearts may wander side by side,

With truth their lantern and their guide.

So let the ancient clocktower chime,

And let the darkened wings of Time

Pass overhead as all things do;

I do not fear their passage through.

For when I'm with him, moments bow,

Eternity inhabits now;

And though all earthly things must part,

Love ripens slowly in the heart.

What Time can take was never ours;

What Time cannot grow hour by hour.

And thus beneath the turning skies,

I found forever in his eyes.
