Fly

To fly with broken wings,

is to know the stigma that comes with being a bird of colour.

The hen that births multiple chicks,

the one that overindulges,

the exception to the flock.

The white bird,

the brown bird,

why is it a surprise that I can also be a blackbird?

Amusing,

distinctive chirp.

But when we gather,

the bird call that fills the air is one of synchronized pride.

With broken wings we soar in the air,

with the hope and determination of finding a place of lasting acceptance.

A warm climate,

that wholeheartedly embraces a species of vibrant colours.

Let this bird take flight,

unhindered,

… into open skies.
