Firefly
They say we slowly dwindle
flies on fragile wings
that kindle a fleeting, fluorescent glow along the darkened groves.
They scarcely ever heed us,
yet sing endearing praises
to the distant stars that shine
many light-years away.
They whisper prayers to the heavens, leave offerings for the skies,
while cutting down the groves and shrubs where we are born and thrive.
Yet a tender hope persists
a small, stubborn wish to survive, to brighten dimly lit corners
of unseen, remote country margins.
Perhaps who knows?
the little ones may still learn of us as they browse through Wikipedia or even Youtube for cartoons.
