Updated: Oct 5, 2024

Ek Onkar, often translated as “One God”, is a central concept in sikkhism. The

concept of “EK ONKAR” was given by “Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji”. It is found at the

beginning of the sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, represents the fundamental

belief in the unity of God. “Ek” means “one”, and “Onkar refers to the “eternal

being or the divine essence.

This phrase encapsulates, the monotheistic nature of sikkhism, emphasizing the

belief in a single, formless, and all-pervasive God. It reflects the sikh belief that

there is only one creator who is present in all opf creation.

Additionally, Ek Onkar signifies the interconnectedness of all beings, highlighting

the oneness of humanity and the equality of all individuals before the divine. It

serves as a reminder to Sikhs to live in harmony with others and to recognise the

divine presence in everyone.
