Eersterivier

Oh, whatever has become of you, Eersterivier?

Not a sniff left of the quiet, peaceful town of once.

Pray tell, what is it that has turned the tide for you,

when now, personal safety has become a swear word?

You’ve turned into the biblical mourning Jerusalem,

calling on travelers to take heed of your sorrows.

Or are you rather the image of the Gaza of today?

For gunfire of kin and foreigner rules the hour.

Years past, home-grown ubuntu nurtured your all,

with every village and heights supporting this lovingly.

Sadly now, disaster is the keeper of them and more,

because their cloth of safety has been burnt and buried.

Your children are taken out any day, every day, relentlessly.

Seemingly, innocence or guilt matters not in violence.

The blood of your sons and daughters cannot dry,

because the earth is constantly saturated with life fluid.

Again then, Eersterivier, what has become of you?

Not long ago, you were the best address this side of town.

Now, drugs and murder seem to be the purpose of life.

Eersterivier, my abode of choice, what has become of you?
