Do You Hear It Too?

Maybe it was his phone, maybe his eyes

Or just the fact he always said hi when passing by

He met his end by my hands all the same

One might say I'm insane

I say nay, let me say why I am sane!

I have taken my meds for the first time in weeks!

When I stalked him that night, you couldn't hear me

Not a peep

Would a mad man make sure to cover his shriek?

Would he be so detailed? Would he be so clean?

His phone vibrated, I picked it up for him!

It was his wife and kids, asking where he was!

I hung up, hands trembling

He was merely across the hall, in my apartment

… Nevertheless

Perhaps inviting him over was a mistake

It haunts me

I hid his body under the planks

Would it smell?

Even though he already smelled like hell?

The family learned he wasn't coming back

It was a sound worse than a vibration

Over and over

At night, as days passed by

I think I can still hear the phone vibrating

In sync with the wails of the family down the hall

I still hear them through the planks and walls

As I grow old, not learning anything new

But I can't ask anyone if they hear it too
