The sun beat upon the crowd that had queued in the empty ground adjoining Sister Sandra’ council-house. There was no shade anywhere except for a small gazebo where the pots with the prepared meal were laid on a trestle table. The residents had formed two lines that snaked out of the property and onto the pavement. Each family was told to carry a container to take food home.

Sister Sandra took the microphone and addressed the crowd.

“People of Pageview, I know you are hungry and waiting to eat the delicious food that has been prepared for you. You must wait a few more minutes as we wish to thank the person who is providing this meal for you. Please clap for Mr Deenadayalu* Krishna**.”

The crowd clapped dutifully. Mr Krishna was a short, dark complexioned, stoutly built man in his fifties. He cleared his throat loudly before speaking.

He recounted how his grandfather had come to South Africa at seventeen years of age as an indentured labourer in the sugar-cane fields. He described the hardships endured by families who toiled and sacrificed for their loved ones, and spoke proudly of the obstacles they overcame and the legacy they left to future generations…

The people in the queues wiped their brows and listened patiently. Some of the residents who were too old or sickly to stand had sent grandchildren to stand on their behalf. One girl, about nine, had a folded newspaper in her hand which she used to fan herself.

Mr Krishna spoke proudly, “Today, I will serve each of you myself. I want to share the joy of Diwali with you all.”

The serving began. A family member took photographs. The people posed and smiled. It was the little girl’s turn to receive food. She unrolled a newspaper as her plate. Mr Krishna frowned.

“Granny is sick. I couldn’t find a container.” She stammered.”

Mr Krishna’s eight-year-old grandson said, “Dadaji, that’s you in the newspaper!”

Mr Krishna’s eyes squinted and he saw the community newspaper article that covered his rise to riches. He struggled to articulate his words. In his mind, he saw the framed article in his lounge and - this.

“How dare you?”

The girl stared – confused and terrified.

“How dare you use the newspaper which has my father’s picture as a plate! Such disrespect to my father. Have your parents not taught you any respect?”

The girl’s eyes welled with tears. Her lips were quivering. She opened her mouth to speak but no words would come out.

Sister Sandra rushed to her defence. “Sir, the little girl does not have parents. They died tragically in a motorcar accident five years ago. She lives with her elderly grandmother in a council-house in the area. Let me get a container for her.” She pulled the girl to the side.

“Wait here, Patience!”

A few minutes later, she returned with a much-used two litre plastic ice-cream tin. The girl smiled with relief and put her two hands together and made a slight bow. When the container was filled, the girl turned to the man hesitantly and said:

“Thank you, Uncle!”

Mr Krishna looked at her and nodded. Then he stared at the crowd in front of him and said, “Let’s keep this queue moving, people!”

………………………………The end…………………………
