DIASPORA

The desire for an "authentic coloured" is still the desire for a categorisable one. They still seek a type of "coloured" I've never quite been. The type that is loud and quick to speak. Not the type who listens and is slow to react.

This is realised at an acting audition: "The authentic coloured speaks a certain language, has a specific accent and grew up in a community full of people just like them."

I realise, the "authentic coloured" is not suburban. Authenticity is determined by communal culture, not upbringing. My desire to be seen and heard as a coloured in South Africa will never be acknowledged because we're already marginalised as it is. Being part of the minority of an already displaced group people just makes it more difficult for me to be recognised.

Never been black enough and will never be coloured enough. I am still displaced.
